5 things you need to know about your record collection

Whether you're just starting your record collection or have been a hard-core collector for years, here are the 5 things you need to know about your collection.

1. Never store your records flat:

Your records should always be stored upright, it makes for easy selection and having them stored flat will cause uneven pressure which leads to warping of your records.

2. How to find out which pressing you have:

Popular internet database websites such as Discogs and Popsike will give you the the correct pressing when you insert the barcode SKU. In some cases like older records where there is no barcode or the barcode will return multiple pressings you can look up the matrix number in the dead wax of your record.

3. Keep you records cool:

It is advised to have your albums stored in a dry and cool room, a temperature between 15°C to 25°C and a humidity between 35% to 45% is ideal. Records will warp when they get hot and moldy when too wet, too cold will cause the vinyl to go brittle.

4. How to take care of your records:

A vinyl record is more robust than most people think, while you can spend tons of money on cleaning equipment and material, if you're collection is stored correctly and you handle them with a microfibre cleaning cloth (wipe off the dust if any with the cloth while spinning before you drop the needle) your record will most likely outlive you. Ask us for a free microfibre cloth with your next order!

5. What to play your records on:

While you can spend your lifetime savings on the most expensive player there is no need to, to enjoy the warmth sounds of vinyl. (Feel free to do so if you please, as there are some absolutely stunning turntables out there) it is advised to avoid the really cheap turntables as the cartridge, the only part touching your vinyl, could cause too much pressure and damage it. So ideally a turntable with traction control and an interchangeable cartridge will get go going. For those of you that only collect and don't play your records, make sure there is tiny hole in the seal if you keep your records sealed.
